" Having been in the non-profit sector for over 30 years, I have had various experiences with consultants over the years. Oftentimes, organizations reach out to consultants because they have a gap in skills on their staff or have identified a need that is better served by bringing in a new perspective or outside facilitator. This process can be at the best clunky- requiring a lot of staff time to share information about programming and culture. On top of the additional time it takes to onboard an "outsider", consultants are often paid higher hourly than the staff in the organizations and they leave plans for work for that same staff to do, rather than helping to accomplish any real deliverables.
